2004-11-16 ESSEX CRANE RENTAL CORP. RECEIVES AMERISURE SAFETY AWARD

Amerisure Insurance, who specializes in worker compensation programs, recently recognized Essex Crane Rental Corp. for their outstanding safety performance and due to their unprecedented achievement of having no recorded loss time incidents for calendar year 2003. Betty Ezzell, Territory Manager for Amerisure credits Essex’s innovated and proactive Safety Program for this success, “Job site safety and low loss ratios require continuous attention to detail and Essex Crane Rental has proven that through concentration on work safety, management and training, you can accomplish this goal. The improvements made by Essex were the best I’ve seen from a company in such a short time period.”
Four years ago the company had a lost time occurrence rate that was well above industry levels. The new management team at Essex vowed to change their unacceptable safety record. Essex Crane Rental recognizes that its most valued asset is its employees. With that in mind, Essex’s senior management embarked on creating a culture where safety was not only encouraged, but also demanded and ultimately rewarded.
The first step involved the modification and evolution of the safety program tailored to Essex Crane Rental Corp. This program included and stressed weekly tool box meetings and hands-on training that encompassed all areas of workers activities; from ladder safety to heat stress. Through this process Essex found many ways to improve the manner in which jobs were done. Essex followed up the safety awareness training with strict enforcement of all safety procedures and rules. Additionally, a financial reward program was introduced. The reward program equally compensates all employees if certain safety goals are achieved. For example the achievement of the one year zero lost time goal meant all employees were paid a $950.00 bonus. Bruce Johnson, Safety Manager at Essex Crane stated “Essex’s safety program including our bonus opportunity and strict rules and procedures provides both the carrot and the stick needed to engage everyone’s full attention. Working safe at Essex is required not optional.”
