The Manitowoc 16000, which is rated at 440 tons US, will become the largest crane without an attachment in the Essex fleet. The Manitowoc 16000 is extremely popular in the wind power industry; however, Ron Schad, President & CEO of Essex, believes the usefulness of the crane extends far beyond.

“We believe that the 16000 lends itself nicely to the bare rental marketplace and not just wind power,” stated Schad. “The 16000 can be utilized in various industries including power generation, petro-chemical, refineries and fabrication.”

The purchase of the 16000s will also include No. 59 Luffing Jibs and extended upper boom points. Essex will receive its first 16000 in April of 2008 with additional units to follow.

In addition the 16000, Essex has decided to add more Manitowoc 14000s, 220 tons US, to the fleet. Essex purchased its first 14000 in May of 2007 and has found it to be a great addition the 220 ton fleet class, according to Schad.

“The backbone of the Essex fleet still remains in the 220 ton class machines,” Schad said. “The 14000 has proven to be a nice compliment to our popular traditional Manitowoc 4100W fleet.”
